Sleeping Troll Writing Prompt With Author, Lawrence BoarerPitchford!

Derek was running. Tommy, Pip, and Lorain were somewhere behind him. They would have to fend for themselves. He was interested in saving only his hide. If the terrors caught him, he’d be done for. He turned to the east along the Hunterhill Corner, then ran head long into the Tell Fall Downs.
The high mounds were twice the height of a hill giant, and as wide as a giant’s out spread arms.
A kreekle lashed out at his calf as he passed by. Luckily, it wasn’t a red one, he thought as he put his head down and ran on. Far behind him, he heard the terrors break from the greenwood and bear down on him.
Rushing around a tomb he cut down a narrow passage of high stones. Darkness enveloped him, and at the far end he could see the speck of light that was the exit. The pungent scent of old soil and fungus rammed up his nose as he pumped the life giving air in and out of his lungs.
The light was growing brighter, and brighter, until he popped out the opening and onto the ancient Down’s road. The terrors came on, and Derek extended his stride.
The hedges were just ahead. If he could make it, he could lose the villains in the green thickets and brambles. Another second and he’d be under the cover. A screech vibrated the hairs along his ears. A chill ran up his spine. The leader of the terrors was nearly upon him. He cut right, then left, then dove through jagged hole in the hedge. The terror smashed into the thick foliage and was repelled. It screeched, then began tearing its way through.
Derek cushioned the fall with his hands, guided himself into a forward roll, and came up in a dead run. Up along a yeti path he ran, over rocks, and across a fast moving brook. He turned down a path, and skidded to a halt. It was the Toomy Bluffs; boulders stacked one upon another forming a long wall north, and south. In the hedge rows the cry of the terrors echoed. Derek looked back; the dark bodies of the terrors were lurking through the bushes in search of him.
Falling to the ground he pulled up some moss and cut away at the bottom of it with his hand. Quickly he pulled up a section, like rolling back a carpet, slipped under it, and lay still, just as the terrors emerged.
“It came this way, I am sure of it,” the lead terror said.
“Command us oh lord of horror,” another said.
The sound of sniffing echoed above Derek. Foot falls landed just next to him.
“The flesh, the blood, I have desired it for a moon and a day. Now, for your incompetence it has escaped us!” chided the leader. Some whimpering could be heard, then a snarl, a squawk, and more whimpering.
Derek held his breath.
“It traveled down the other path,” the lead terror stated. “Come, we will hunt no more this one. There will be something else cometh for our delights. I feel it in my bones.”
Footsteps drifted away into the underbrush. Derek stayed still for a very long time. Finally, he rolled back the moss and peeked out. The area was empty, but the sun was vanishing. The night would soon be upon him, and in the silver-blue luminance of the moon, a whole new set of dangers.

An interview with author, Emma Carolan!!

Meet our guest, Emma Carolan!

Good afternoon, Emma. Where are you from?
Dundalk, Co. Louth, Ireland.

What inspired you to write your first book?
Not really sure if I am honest.  It was something that was in my head and needed to come out it was driving me mad.

I know what you mean. Sometimes the words just demand to be written! So, do you write full-time or part-time? How do you balance your writing life with your family/work life?
Part-time.  I have a full time job. I see my family at the weekend and I write mostly in the evenings and at night time.

What jobs have you held that influence your stories?
I worked in a company called Dunnes Stores for a while when I was 17 and then when I was 18 I worked in the Vodafone call center for 5 years. I was made redundant in January 2012 and in March 2012 I worked for a company called Emerald Isle Collections, they are a debt collection company, in January 2013 I started with a company called Arvato and I worked in the debt collection team there and Currently I am working in a call center for eBay. I have only been there for about 4 weeks now.

Do you have a specific writing style?
I just go with the flow and see what comes out if I like it I keep it if I don’t I delete it.  If I don’t know what’s going to happen next hopefully my readers wont either.

How did you come up with the title?
Well for ages it had the amazing tile of ‘Working Title’ and then I called it ‘Green eyes’ (You’ll have to read it to see why lol) and when I was going over it and editing it ‘Leap of Faith’ just seemed right. I seemed to fit with the story.

It's a great title! Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Life is not easy.  You don’t always get what you want.  Just because someone looks happy and smiles does not mean that they are happy and most of all money is not everything, money is nothing without love.

How much of the book is realistic?
I would say about 80%-90% of it is, hopefully.

Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?
No way! Really my life is nothing like that at all. I have had a really good life and if it was based around my life it would be all sunshine and rainbow and its not at all. There is a big romance in it but its not all sunshine!

What books have most influenced your life most?
This is going to sound a bit silly, but I started to read them when I was 13 and before they got popular, Harry Potter,  I loved J.K Rowling's writing and I loved been taken into a different world  one where magic was a real thing and not just something in my minds eye.

That's not silly at all! Harry Potter is quite addictive. Tell us, if you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
W.B. Yeats. I love his poems and his works, I actually have a collection of his poems in my  hand bag right now. Lol

What book are you reading now?
Well at the moment I have not started one as I am waiting for one to come in the post and I don’t want to start one and have to put it down.  I am waiting for the new Sylvia Day book Entwined With You.

Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
I like Sylvia Day’s style of writing.
What are your current projects?
Book two of ‘Leap of Faith’ is in the works.

Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
A friend in America that I emailed random notes to, Elizabeth, She seemed to enjoy my randomness and the fact the she did not know me too well made it that bit better because she was not just saying that she liked my work to be nice, she really liked it.

Do you see writing as a career?
No. The day that I write for money (as a career) is the day that I will stop writing, I write because I love to write I don’t want it to become a chore.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
I don’t know if I would have the courage to do it again, I mean send it away for someone else to approve of it.  I suppose I would try and get a bit more sleep and not sit up until 3am typing most nights.

Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I always had an interest in writing, when I was 7 or 8 years old I entered a writing competition in primary school, I remember it was a story about my family and I had to draw a picture at the back of it, well I won that competition and the story was on display in Trinity College in Dublin for a week, its probably in the archives now, I can’t remember what I wrote in it.

Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Well here is a poem that I wrote a few days ago, its just a little something that popped into my head:
The Muse Whispered in my ear.

The muse whispered in my ear, she sways my thoughts, persuades my dreams

The muse whispered in my ear, she showed me what I could be

She showed me that I could float above a sky and shin like a star

She whispers in my ear to tell me how great I can be.

If only I could believe in me as much as she believes in me

If only my fear was not greater than by belief

The muse whispers in my ear, she sways my thoughts, persuades my dream

She can see beyond my time, she can see how great I could be

She sing like an angel in my ear, she sings like an angel in the night

If only I could show her to the world, she could show them what I could be

If only I could show her to the world she could sway their thoughts of me

The muse whispers in my ear, she sways my thoughts, persuades my dreams

She is part of me, if only I did not hide her from the world, then they could see how great I could be

If only I did not lock her in a cage as soon as people saw  she was me

If only I could set her free, she could show the world what is inside of  me

She stays by my side, day and night, never leaving my sight

The muse she whispers in my ear, she sways my thoughts, persuades my dreams

She show my what I could be, if only I could believe in me as much as she believes in me

She sings like an angel in the night, she soars high above the sky, she shines bright in the dark of night.

If only my fear was not stronger than my belief, I could be what I am meant to be

She is part of me, if only I could free her from the cage that she sits patiently

If only I could show her to the world, she could show them what I could be

She could sway their hearts, persuade their minds

The muse she whispers in my ear, sways my thoughts persuades my dreams.

The muse she is part of me. She is me.

Lovely! Thanks for sharing, Emma. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Yes. Stopping when I start. I forget that I need to sleep sometimes.

Who is your favorite author and what is it that really strikes you about their work?
I don’t really have a favorite, but I like it when an author can take me into their world and get me to think the way they think. When I am glued to a book and can’t put it down, Love that.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
At the moment no. Not at all.

Who designed the covers?
The team at Creative Flight Publishing and I worked together as team to come up with the cover.

What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Finding the time to write it.

Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
Yes. That I love writing.

Do you have any advice for other writers?
Don’t give up. Keep going. If at once you don’t succeed try, try, try again. Never give up on your dreams.

Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
Hopefully they will enjoy reading it as much as I loved writing it, hopefully they will fall in love with the characters as I did.

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing it to life?
Well to be honest it was all just in my head and it needed to come out, I did not not do much research at all.

What do you think about e-publishing versus technical publishing?
I think its good to have both the options, but I love having a really book in my hands, I love the smell and fell of new book and the first crack of a new spine is just so divine.

Do you have an agent or publisher? How did you go about finding one?
I have a publisher, no agent, I done a search online and I came across a few and I sent the book to a few places in Ireland and a few places in the U.S.A and Creative Flight Publishing got back to me and said they were interested we talked via email, I liked what I heard and then they sent me over a contract I printed it out and sent back and here we are today.

If you could live anywhere, where would it be?
Miami.  Sunshine all the time.

That's funny! I'd like to live in Ireland. Let's switch! If you could have any super power, what would it be?
Read peoples minds. So that I could know liars and fakes from the real people in this world

Thanks for visiting Write Like a Wizard this week!

What is the best writing advice you've ever received?

What is the best piece of writing advice you've ever received?

Well, for me, this came from a writer I met at the Mystery Writer's Association conference in Charlotte last October. I will find out the fellows name and get back to you with it. Anyway, he told me that you must put yourself in luck's path. To me, that means you cannot simply sit around and wait for luck to find you.

No...you must be proactive.

Therefore, I am attending multiple conferences this year and next, traveling to the World Fantasy Convention is Brighton, UK in October, and sending out 100 query letters to agents.

What do you do to put yourself in luck's path?

Writing Challenge With Author, Emma Carolan!!

The Challenge:
In 3000 words or less, write about a girl who is in love with the boy next door, only to find out he is moving away to another continent. What does she do? Does he even love her back?

The Author:
Emma Carolan

Julia lived alone with her father for years it was just the two of them to keep each other company and when her father got too much to handle she could always turn to her best friend, who luckily lived next door.
His name was Jackson and they done everything together. They walked to and from school they even had a few classes together. He was her best friend and she wanted it to stay that way forever. As time passed by like it was bound to do, they grew up and Julia talked to Jackson about everything, boy troubles, girl troubles, drama with her life in general and Jackson listened to every word in hopes that one day she would realise that what she was looking for in life was right under her noise and it was him.

Julia storms through the door in a rage and slams it behind her: “Ughhhhhh......” she storms over to the sofa in the middle of the apartment that Julia and Jackson share, she flings herself down, sighs and mumbles “Men. Why do I even bother? They are all jerks or at least the ones that I attract are.”
Jackson was over in the kitchen area making some tea fro himself, he pours her a cup and joins her on the sofa: “What happen this time?” He sighs and hands her the tea.
“He was just a creep.” Julia takes the tea and sips it slowly: “Do you want to talk about it?” Jackson asks with caution as he can clearly see that she is really pissed off.
“No.” Julia shakes her head and Jackson simply says “Ok.” and sits back to drink his tea.
“I mean does he really think I am that kinda girl? Like really?” Julia blurts out.
“What kinda girl?”
“The kind that just gives it up to anyone and on the first date!” Julia sits forward and puts her tea on the glass coffee table in front of the sofa. She looks Jackson in the eyes and says: “Do you think I am like?” She looks so vulnerable and lost. Almost like she is seeking his approval.  “Of course not, Sweetie I have known you forever, I know you like no other. You are one of the good ones, the keepers.”
Julia sighs ands leans back in her seat: “Why can’t the guys I date see me like that and not a piece of ass to chase? Why can’t I find a guy like you?”
Julia kisses Jackson on the cheek and says: “Thanks for listening. I’m away to bed.”

Julia is walks into work and sees the mountain of paper work at her desk she sighs and sits down to attend to the pile of files.  All she can think about is her conversation with Jackson last night. He’s leaving.  He’s moving to India in tonight.  Life wont be the same without him. I won’t know what to do with myself when he is not around.  He is my rock, he is my life.
All these thoughts were rolling around in her head and then she realised that she loved him, she always had, she just never knew it.  She looks at her watch and its 4 pm. Jackson’s flight takes off at 5.30 pm, she thinks to herself, I might be able to catch him if I run and leave now. I may get fired but I don’t care life without Jackson would not be worth living.
Julia grabs her bag and runs out the door, her boss calls after her and she just ignores him and keeps running. Traffic is manic at this time of day, she is about 3 miles away from the air port, she decided instead of getting a taxi she will run the whole way to the airport to confess her love to Jackson and hopefully he will choose her, hopefully he will stay with her and not leave her.
She runs as fast as she can and she just about makes it, Jackson was just about to pass the security gate and Julia calls out to him: “Jackson! Jackson wait there!” She runs over to him and he apologizes to the security man, turns to face Julia: “What are you doing here. I told you I was fine. You did not have to come to see me off.”
Out of breath from running the full way to the airport she says: “I... I... I love you Jackson.... You can’t go.”
Jackson looks at his ticket and back to Julia, he looks like he is been torn in two: “Why could you not have figured this out three weeks ago. You know this is my dream job. You know that I would do anything for you, but this is a chance that I will never get again and I have to take it. I’m sorry Julia I have to go.” Jackson’s turns back to the security man and walks through the gates: “Jackson! NO! Please.” She cries after him and tries to follow but she is halted as she does not have a boarding pass. The only man in her life that has ever been kind and true to her is walking out of her life to follow his dreams.

Julia returns home to an empty apartment and she cries her eyes out, already life seems so lonely without him around.  She pulls out her laptop and wipes her eyes dry.  If he can’t stay with me I can go to him.  She books a seat on the next flight to India and packs her bags.  She calls a cab and makes her way to the airport.  Just as her cab pulls away from the apartment. Jackson leaps out of one and runs up to the stairs only to find an empty room. He calls out for Julia and but she does not answer.  He tries to call her phone a few times but there is no answer, he figures he will try one last time and it was a good job he did Julia answers the phone with a smile and says: “Jackson.”
“Julia where are you?”
“I’m at the airport.  I am going to go India to be with you.”
Jackson chuckles and says: “I’m at the apartment. To be with you.”
Julia sighs and says: “Really? You would do that for me? You would give up your dreams for me?”
“Julia you are my dreams. You have been since the day you and your father moved in next door.  I have always loved you.”
“Oh Jackson.  I love you so much.”
“You are willing to move to India to be with me?”
Without hesitation Julia answers: “Yes. In a heartbeat. I have no life here without you. It could be an adventure if we go together.”
“Are you still willing to go?”
“Yes.” Julia whispers as the reality of everything starts to sink in.
Jackson gets a cab to the airport and finds Julia waiting for him.  They run to each and Julia leaps into Jackson’s awaiting arms. Jackson kisses her long and hard as he spins her: “I have wanted to do that for so long.” Jackson whispers as he places her on her feet again.
Julia breaths “I wish you had of done it before now.”
“Are you ready to start our new life... Together.”
Julia looks into Jackson eyes frightened and all as she is, she answer honestly: “Yes.”
Hand in hand they board the plane and set off for their new life in India as a couple.
