What is the best writing advice you've ever received?

What is the best piece of writing advice you've ever received?

Well, for me, this came from a writer I met at the Mystery Writer's Association conference in Charlotte last October. I will find out the fellows name and get back to you with it. Anyway, he told me that you must put yourself in luck's path. To me, that means you cannot simply sit around and wait for luck to find you.

No...you must be proactive.

Therefore, I am attending multiple conferences this year and next, traveling to the World Fantasy Convention is Brighton, UK in October, and sending out 100 query letters to agents.

What do you do to put yourself in luck's path?
