Beautiful Stranger is quick read that delivers on heat, romance, and an overall fantastic story. 

We begin with Claudia, a young woman bored with her job and her life, and tired of the worthless men she's used to dating. On a chance encounter she meets Peter. He's drunk in his car, and seems utterly hopeless...except he's incredibly good-looking and somehow urges an uncharacteristic response from Claudia.

She offers to drive him to her house to sober up.

Interesting...

Once at her home it doesn't take long for his charm to spark something new in her. She learns of his wife's betrayal and immediately empathizes with him. How could anyone cheat on a man so attractive, wealthy, and genuinely kind?

Passions ignite, and the two heat up the pages as they explore and please each other's bodies. The sex scenes deliver, and are well written...but what pleases me is that it doesn't end there. There is so much more to this story that you must explore. Beautifully written, with characters that feel real almost immediately, this book is one that I would recommend.

This collection of short horror stories is well written and will make your skin crawl! Try not to read it in the dark...or alone...or an empty house. I enjoyed every story, especially the one about the painter. It reminded me of the Curse of Dorian Gray. Within this collection you'll be faced with demons, ghouls, vampires and more. I felt that the author's style was reminiscent of H.P. Lovecraft. I have a feeling that I'll be thinking about these stories for quite a while.

Are you ready for the farm from hell?

When Old McDonald begins, Gene is in the kitchen making chili. He is afraid of what is hiding in his barn. Something horrible is out there, and he is afraid that it will break into the house. Whatever it is has already seriously injured his wife.

I am a huge fan of horror stories, and this one was great. My curiosity was dying to know what was going on just from reading the description of the book. Once I started, the questions kept piling up in my brain with every page I read. I'm not sure that I would have ever wanted to own cloned livestock before, but now I know I never will.

The main character is one determined man who will go through anything to save his wife. He goes through hell attempting to get medical help for her, and I believe his love for her is what enables him to survive.

The non-stop action, vivid descriptions, and nail-biting suspense were so great that I kept reading even when I exercised on my elliptical machine. I couldn't bear to put my Kindle down.

The opening two pages.... yeah, wow. Well played, Mr. Saxsma, well played.

Openings are make-or-break for storytelling, grab your reader - or audience - and hold on. Andrew Sawsma nails his opening of Old McDonald. The use of pretty prose, in the opening paragraphs, paints such a lovely image of a man cooking. Home, food, and family; it's peaceful and safe...then...

Things. Get. Creepy.

It's not a kick-the-doors-in-guns-blazing change of tempo but rather a slow boil of something off. Creepy, creepy questions start burning into your mind. "Who and what are they?" "What's with the, near comatose, people in the living room?" "The wife is dying?....what the hell is going on?"

Soon it's one thing after another. I mean it. This is a calculated prize fight with the grit of a street brawl. Hit after hit, relentless. I found myself at the point I was begging that the characters would get a lucky break; a moment to catcher their breath. Like that annoying guy at the theater, I was screaming at the characters, "Don't..."... I'm not going to tell you, what they shouldn't have been doing, You'll just have to read it yourselves.

This book of stories was so wonderful to read. K.N. Lee has once again created something wonderful. From the first short story to the third. It's short but of course because they are short stories. They leave you wondering what happened to these people, and the information you do find out leaves you wanting more. I would recommend this book to anyone!

I knew after her first short story in a creative writing class that K.N. Lee was going to publish. With each story, she brings the dark and the bizarre. K.N. Lee weaves twisted tales via her strong women characters. The settings are eerie, the characters are tantalizing, and the plots are twisted. The stories are brief, but they create a desire from readers for more works from this author. She has a knack for leaving a story open for interpretation and ending with a twist. I look forward to reading more from her.

My Review:

Energize follows the adventures of Daniel Quinn, a wanted man that happens to have his own ship with a pretty sophisticated artificial intelligence of its own. This is Thomas Ray Manning's first sci-fi novel and you'd never guess it! The character development was strong, the plot was interesting and suspenseful, and the dialogue was surprisingly crisp and witty. I really enjoyed Manning's set up of an entire new world unknown to human man. The culture, appearance, and even the way the natives communicated was a fun discovery. I'd recommend this novel to any sci-fi fan. There was just enough, description, action, and tension to keep me entertained.

The Chronicles of Koa focuses on the journey of Koa, a female, half vampire living in the human world with her guardian Halston, a "perfect man" of unique and mysterious powers to an underworld of evil and danger. From the beginning, it's clear that there will certainly be surprises as Koa has abilities that makes her character very different; for instance, in combat, she effortlessly wields a huge sword that detects evil and she can be exposed to direct sunlight.. In a recurring theme, the author seems to play with the reader, taking your stereotypes of what is accepted about the rules of vampires and other fantastical creatures but presenting something different.

I thoroughly enjoyed Koa, the character. She is depicted as a strong and powerful protagonist, but one with flaws. She is frequently impulsive throughout the novel and quick to anger both, somewhat anti-thematic to the calm, cool grace that most vampires are associated with. But she exhibits feistiness and self-resolve as her past is slowly revealed. You learn that even what Koa herself knows is not all there is to her life and situation. In this sense, I felt that Netherworld was a bit of an origin story that seem to be all the rage in superhero movies these days. The main character is just starting to learn about her powers and how to use them in her surroundings.

The supporting cast that Koa and Halston meet in their travels is the other strength of the author's writing. I found several of the characters genuinely interesting and am anxiously awaiting their continuing roles in the next book. The others are a very eclectic mix and have their own background and abilities which I hope are expanded on in the future.

There are some light romance themes throughout as well. But to be clear, the story is NOT anything like the fluffy young adult drivel of a certain goopy all too long vampire movie series. This is a character driven adventure in a rich and detailed world which the protagonist learns about her past as we the readers do. Her self discovery changes her perspective on the few friends she has and we share in those moments of confusion and enlightenment as she struggles to figure out herself and her past.

Bottom line: this is an engrossing read that ends all too soon. A book that is part dark fantasy, part adventure with colorful and creative personalities throughout; think less Twilight Saga and more Arya Stark meets Ocean 11.

 A fantasy adventure tale with a bite!

 

For her debut novel, K.N Lee weaves a fast paced, vivid and detailed world, full of intrigue, sweet action and most importantly... interesting characters.

I enjoyed the build up of the world through the different perspectives, whether through fallen angel Halston, the still enigmatic Raven, or of course our resident bad-ass Koa.

Although set and drawn from some familiar concepts like vampires and mystical creatures, the world feels original and comes alive through its own history and every character has an interesting twist or back-story.

Koa is a little bratty, but i look forward to seeing her grow as a character as she continues to kick butt across Europe, the Netherworld or whatever other cool places this adventure might lead!

There is no doubt that I'll be picking up this sequel on day one!

Review of The Education of Lilanoir Rue by, Morgan Jane!

The Education of Lilanoir Rue is an excellent prequel to Morgan Jane's upcoming Sanguis City series! I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastical short story about a girl named Lily. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where humans live on reservations and vampires have taken over. The imagery is brilliant and the story is fast paced. Honestly, I wish it was longer, but alas, it is a short story and meant to elicit the readers interest in the full length novel!

Even thought the author alludes to the fact that Lily isn't a normal human, she doesn't reveal too much of her abilities or differences. I appreciated this, because it definitely added to the suspense! What we do learn is that she has super human strength, she's fast, and has fangs. I cannot wait to find out what happens next and find out what happened to her love interest, Crow!

Review of The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld by Thomas R. Manning!!

The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld is the debut novel of K.N. Lee. The story follows Koa, a mysterious hybrid vampire who thirsts for blood, but can walk in the daylight and fly. Yes, I said fly. Due to circumstances that are unknown to us at the beginning of the book, Koa is special, not only because of her power of flight, but because she is wanted by creatures of the Netherworld. As you read this book, you’ll be entertained and thrown from left to right with the various revelations and plot twists that are revealed throughout. The ending was very satisfying for me, though I will tell you that it ends on a cliffhanger. The good news is that this cliffhanger didn’t leave me frustrated, but excited for the next book in the series!

K.N. Lee developed a wonderful cast of characters and creatures for her novel. Vampires take the center stage in the story, but they’re not in any way the bland, overused vampires you see in other books. I really enjoyed learning about the different types of vampires, ones that are from the Netherworld and ones that are created on Earth. I thought the ‘pet’ system was very cool and smart. By choosing a human pet for each vampire, they are able to contain their blood thirst from the public eye. All vampires are also required to register with the Netherworld Netherworld Division, of which Koa is an agent. If vampires are running loose around the world, it’s the divisions job to take care of them. Besides vampires you’ll read about a fallen angel seeking redemption, demons, and even creatures created by K.N. Lee herself. She did a great job designing these creatures and the world they inhabit. Two of the first supporting characters you meet, Halston and Raven the cat, were brilliantly developed, and their interaction with Koa is fun to read. Other supporting characters are similarly well developed, but they’re not in the spotlight as much as Halston and Raven are. 

I only really found two things that could be improved on with the next entry in the series – I praised the interactions between three of the main characters, but I did find some of the dialogue in the book to be a bit blocky, not as smooth as it could’ve been. Also, there are some grammatical errors in the book, not so many that will lessen the enjoyment of the story, but they are noticeable nonetheless. 

K.N. Lee has done a fantastic job with her debut novel. It has a fantastic story, twists and turns throughout, and some mysteries you won’t see coming. I’m looking forward to reading more of her books as she writes them. The Chronicles of Koa #2 will certainly be a day one purchase for me!

After reading the first couple chapters online I knew I had to read more about Koa! The author has created a engrossing world with vampires, angels and other mythical creatures. And not just any mythical creatures, her creations were... awesome! I could really see this being a movie with all the action and amazing imaginary. 

More than anything, I appreciated the creativity of this book, traveling in the Netherworld was a fascinating journey. Also, the story surprised me. At one point Koa had killed everyone fairly easy with her magical sword and I thought that was the end of it but then what happened next had me on the edge of my seat. Koa also made some choices after separating with the handsome British accented Halston that astonished and pleased me, I felt like the story was getting better and better. 

I like when an author isn't afraid to create and K.N. Lee really kept her story interesting. There are so many things I loved, Raven, Wren Castle, the Netherworld Division, Ian, the alchemist, the oracle, the shadows, the discs (cool), the possibilities with Jax... Plus the end, I really didn't see it coming, when Koa remembered what she was made to forget, what a twist! This book introduced a wonderful world, compelling characters and plenty of conflict for the story to continue. Now I can't wait for the next installment.

The Chronicles of Koa: Netherworld Review

This debut novel from K.N. Lee is such a wonderful way for her to introduce her writing skills to the world!! Her writing has a way of getting people excited to read something and it is infectious. This is a fantasy novel full of Vampires and other mythical creatures that are so popular right now in books. Sometimes stories about Vampires can get repetitive and stale, however Ms Lee manages to find a way to create a fresh take on it. Her characters have depth, growth, and they are the kind of characters you can get attached to. Her vision and imagination really comes through on the page and I'm so excited for the second installment of the Chronicles of Koa as this one left me wanting more! I don't want to give any spoilers on the book but it centers around a young woman (who is an anomaly as a half human/half vampire) who is determined to reclaim her memory and her life. She is full of strength and determination and you want to cheer her on. If you like books such as The Hunger Games, or The Mortal Instruments series etc. then this is definitely a book you will enjoy.
