Red Rex: Blood Echoes ** Book Blast **

Red Rex: Blood Echoes

Author, Calinda B.

"Your true name is Red Rex. The baddest of badasses, an alpha warrior beyond compare, here to wipe out the existence of the Deltarcs..." Or, at least, that's what he's been told.

Eighteen year old Gaige Dupond has his life all mapped out. Lose his virginity to Emily. Get married. Become a pro soccer player and travel the world. Simple, right?

His father, a pure-bred Deltarc from another planet, whose race is growing extinct on planet Earth, has other plans--either confirm that he truly takes after his warrior father, and not his dearly departed empath mother, or snuff out his existence.

All plans go awry, however, when the dangerous red darkness in Gaige is awakened like a beam of hell flickering from his right eye, in a night of relentless sexual initiation. Intense cravings and unquenchable arousal are stimulated, and Gaige must find a way to satisfy them without destroying his victims. Pursued by a vicious Deltarc bounty hunter, Deltarc tracking hounds and his father's wicked minions, he loses his home, his life, all that he holds dear in pursuit of the truth. In his quest to find his mother, victim to a corrupt cryopreservation project in outer space, and right the wrongs inflicted on him, he finds something far darker--his own sinister motivations and the need to feed on something other than human food. His only companion, a lab rat refugee named Sojourn, Gaige knows he'll never be loved--not in the way he'd always envisioned. Will he find the revenge he's seeking, or will he become an evil replica of his father? That's the last thing he'd ever wish on himself, but it may be his only option for survival.

5 stars - Calinda B has crafted a very intricate, well described story. Gaige is a normal boy attending high school, playing soccer and in love with his girlfriend Emily. He suddenly faces a very violent coming of age at the hands of his father. While he searches for his mother with the help of his teacher, an older woman and an escaped lab rat, he learns to use his new powers. As he finally accepts himself for who he is now, all of his other problems work themselves out. I absolutely loved this story. Kudos, Calinda.

An Interview With Author, Calinda B.

Let pull up a chair, grab a cup of coffee, and chat with author, Calinda B.

Where are you from?
Born and raised in California, I moved up to the Pacific Northwest many years ago. I live in an area that I call “breathtakingly beautiful,” overlooking trees and water. The Olympic Mountains are in the distance.
What inspired you to write your first book?
It was a risk taking “coming out” of sorts. I had to get a personal experience out of my system and onto the pages, protecting the innocent by cloaking it in a paranormal story.
Do you write full-time or part-time? How do you balance your writing life with your family/work life?
I write every single day but I also have a day job. Same chair in the front room accommodates both occupations. ;-) It all works out. I believe in extremes so my form of balance is extreme.
How did you come up with the title?
My current release is titled Looks like Trouble to Me. It’s all about a sexy as sin bad boy, Jace Savage, who grew up troubled, and seems to attract trouble wherever he goes – hence, the title. He’s a party boy, a yacht builder, a photographer, and, in the first chapter, he’s horny as hell due to the trouble waiting for him at home. I had a lot of fun writing it. Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Oh, I always have some sort of message. The hero, Jace Savage, wants to change, needs to change, but he’s immersed in habitual ways of being.  He’ll be drawn to change through lust and l-l-love (he has a hard time with the L-Word). My message is always pretty simple – we’re all way more than we think we are, and, if we face ourselves and be willing to change, we might turn the course of our life in ways we never expected. Also, have fun along the way.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

Everything I write is based in reality somewhere. I have had, and continue to have, a wild life, full of amazing experiences. In this book, I swore up one side and down the other that I would reveal nothing about the person who inspired the book.
What books have most influenced your life most?

Hmmm. I love anything by Sue Monk Kidd. You can savor a single sentence for a long time – her writing is that good! I also love the sexy writers like Anais Nin, Karen Marie Moning, and JR Ward. They have paved the way for writers like me to freely express my saucy self.
What book are you reading now?

I am reading Butterfly’s Shadow by Lee Langly. It’s not a sexy book – more of a poignant tale of a guy I don’t like (that’s intended by the author), who marries a young fifteen year old Japanese girl in order to get his groove on while he’s stationed in Japan (he’s in the Navy). He’s pretty indifferent to her, her ways, her life, and moves on without much thought. A careless, insensitive man. I’m only a third of the way through, though, and find it a compelling read.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

You know who really rocked my socks? Tahereh Mafi. Wow. I read her Shatter Me series and loved every page.
What are your current projects?

Working on a sci-fi novella called Mindspace for a bundled book to be released this summer. Then, I’m going to dive into more trouble with the next Trouble book! As for non-writing related projects, I’m almost an Assistant Scuba Dive instructor – yippee!
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
No. I love this book. My editor really pushed me to change it, making more conflict throughout. I listened to beta readers, too. I hope you love it as well.
